Australian superstar Jason Donovan comes to the West End in Richard O’Brien’s legendary rock ‘n’ roll musical, The Rocky Horror Show, as part of a new world tour. The legendary performer reprises his iconic role as the captivating Frank-n-Furter across the UK, following a sold-out Australian Tour in 2024.

Born in 1968 in Victoria, Australia, Jason Donovan is an actor, singer and musical theatre performer, who is perhaps best known for playing Scott Robinson in Neighbours opposite Kylie Minogue, as well as playing the role of Joseph at the <a href="/theatres/london-palladium">London Palladium</a> in the 1990s.

Donovan made his television debut at the tender age of eleven, starring in the Australian series Skyways in 1980, which ran for one series. It was in Skyways that Donovan first acted alongside Kylie Minogue, who played his on-screen sister. The pair would later reunite in Neighbours, with Donovan making his Neighbours debut as Scott Robinson in 1986, where he continued in the role for three years. &nbsp;&nbsp;

In 1991, Donovan made his West End debut as Joseph, in the restaged production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat at the London Palladium. His performance saw him receive an Olivier Award nomination for Best Actor in a Musical, where he played the role until 1992, with Phillip Schofield taking over in the titular role.

Off the back of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Donovan had a UK number one single with one of the musical’s songs “Any Dream Will Do”, with the song staying at the top of the charts for two weeks in June and July 1991. In 2007, Donovan came together with fellow Josephs Donny Osmond and Lee Mead to perform at a concert dedicated to Princess Diana.

In recent years, Donovan has made a name for himself as a leading West End star, starring in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Priscilla Queen of the Desert, Sweeney Todd and Jeff Wayne’s War of the Worlds. He played the Pharaoh in&nbsp;Joseph&nbsp;at the Palladium in 2019 and 2021.

In 2022, Donovan played Teen Angel in *Grease,* sharing the role with Peter Andre. A year later, he'll reprise the role alongside Andre and Louise Redknapp.

Go go go Joseph! Andrew Lloyd Webber's latest work, <a href="https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/show/cinderella">Cinderella</a>, is still yet to open thanks to the pingdemic, but his very first is up and running again. Laurence Connor's buoyant revival of Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's Biblical musical charmed audiences back in 2019, and remains an absolute winner. If we can't go to the ball quite yet, at least we've got this technicolour dream.Connor and choreographer JoAnn M Hunter, who also collaborated with Lloyd Webber on School of Rock and Cinderella, understand&nbsp;how to balance the heart and the sublime silliness of Joseph. Essentially a summer panto, it retains its DNA as a school show, with designer Morgan Large scaling up the classic nativity styling that transforms a child purely via a fake beard, a tea towel on their head, and the goodwill of the audience.The theatrical inventiveness is delightful - from the camel bike riding to the toy sheep on skateboards and acrobatic goat (new Olympic events?) - as is the integration of children into the cast, including, on the night I was there, scene-stealing moppet Ethan Sokontwe as a tiny imperious Potiphar. That fits beautifully with the accessible, hyper-efficient storytelling, courtesy of an agile pastiche score and Rice's witty lyrics. It's effortless fun.Yet the lead role requires an awful lot of effort. Connor's version substantially bulks up the Narrator; as well as guiding us through the story, she now plays several characters and leads the dance numbers. It was built around Sheridan Smith and her vaudevillian talents, but gets a very different spin from its new inhabitant, <a href="https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/actor-profile/alexandra-burke">Alexandra Burke</a>.While Smith did too much mugging for my taste, Burke is almost the opposite: she largely plays it straight, treating the drama seriously. When the brothers misbehave, she really takes them to task, and her Jacob is genuinely grief-stricken. The former Strictly finalist is also a dynamite dancer, sharp and grounded, and particularly at home in the hip-hop-fuelled Megamix.Yet there are also times where she's visibly battling the material. Rice's gags are a strain (lots of gesticulating with the hands, not enough enunciating), and there are some wobbly vocals in the fast sections. "A Pharaoh's Story" is more convincing, allowing Burke to let loose with vocal runs and big, belting notes, but that's a rare diva moment for the Narrator.Still, many will likely warm to her inviting and sincere performance, while Joseph purists can, on a few shows, catch Linzi Hateley, who last played the Narrator 30 years ago - and is somehow better than ever. It's a cheering sign that this role is now a boon to actresses of all ages, and I hope we see plenty of creative casting in future.Hateley's early 1990s Joseph was <a href="https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/actor-profile/jason-donovan">Jason Donovan</a>, who is back hamming it up as the Elvis-esque Pharaoh. It's a generously self-deprecating turn; he groans when he has to stand up, knees cracking. And <a href="https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/actor-profile/jac-yarrow">Jac Yarrow</a>, the drama graduate who, like the title character, became a star thanks to Joseph's dreams, returns with a more mature performance and superbly controlled vocals. His "Close Every Door" is just as emotive, but with added power.Steffan Lloyd Evans and Bobby Windebank are standouts as, respectively, brothers Reuben and Simeon, the athletic chorus excel during Hunter's high-voltage hoedown and can-can numbers, and John Cameron's orchestrations, jauntily delivered, are like a vibrant new lick of paint. A few problems remain, though: the calypso is simply irredeemable, and there's a dismaying tendency to use the female ensemble as sexy set dressing.However, from its opening minutes, in which the Narrator begins her fireside tale for the children, there's a lovely emphasis on the pleasures of collective storytelling. It's just the tonic after our long separation. That, and being part of a full-capacity theatre audience all up and dancing to the Megamix. The London Palladium is one of the most famous and prestigious theatres in the heart of London. Steeped in history, the venue first opened its doors in 1910 and has since welcomed millions of visitors. Boasting a grand architecture with a capacity of over 2,200 people, it has played host to a range of world-class performances, ranging from theatrical productions to musical concerts, ballets, and even popular TV shows, such as the 'Sunday Night at the London Palladium'. The interior of the theatre is known for its ornate design, featuring a beautiful proscenium arch and stunning ceiling décor. The venue also offers a glamourous and sophisticated atmosphere, perfect for a night out in the city. Notable past performers at the London Palladium include Sir Bruce Forsyth, Bing Crosby, and Sir Elton John.

 **How to Get to the London Palladium:**

The London Palladium is conveniently located in the West End of London. The closest tube station is Oxford Circus, which is only a short walk away from the venue. Oxford Circus station is served by the Bakerloo, Central, and Victoria lines. Alternatively, the theatre can also be reached by several bus routes that stop near Argyll Street. If you are traveling by car, the nearest car park is the Q-Park in Cavendish Square.

This seems to be the summer of reinvented classic musicals, from the moody [*Oklahoma!*](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/reviews/oklahoma-review-young-vic) at the Young Vic to a revamped *[Legally Blonde](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/show/24209-legally-blonde)* at Regent’s Park Open Air. In that vein, Nikolai Foster dishes up his “gritty” *[Grease](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/show/24201-grease-the-musical)*, which began Leicester Curve, toured the UK and is now playing in the West End. But is this the one that audiences want?

Yes and no. Foster has gone back to Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey’s original stage musical version, rather than the John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John 50s nostalgia-fest movie. It definitely feels rawer: working-class, disaffected, lust-crazed kids bucking against authority, in the mean streets of Chicago instead of sunny California. There are songs you won’t recognise from the film, like an expressive rock solo for [Dan Partridge](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/theatre-news/interviews/dan-partridge-and-olivia-moore-on-playing-danny-and-sandy-in-grease)’s restless Danny Zuko, “How Big I’m Gonna Be”.

But you come to realise the wisdom of the movie adaptation in narrative terms. The Danny/Sandy romance really doesn’t feature that much here, meaning big numbers like “Hopelessly Devoted to You” – though well sung by Olivia Moore – come out of nowhere. Sandy’s climactic sex-kitten transformation is particularly inexplicable, since she’s vigorously defended her (admittedly goody-two-shoes) life choices in previous scenes.

Oddly, their dynamic is also doubled up by Danny’s push-pull relationship with perky cheerleader Patty Simcox, who likewise challenges him to do more with his life than just hang out with his gang, the Burger Palace Boys. She lingers as another romantic prospect, thanks to the charged scenes between Partridge and the vivid Jessica Croll. Yet Patty has more growth than Danny – who’s basically given a free pass for his groping, lying and vacillating. 

But if this *Grease* loses the thread of its boy-meets-girl plot, it’s much more successful as a paean to teen friendships. From the eager back and forth of the indelible “Summer Nights” to the slumber parties and school dances, these are recognisably kids who take solace in and want to fit in with their peers, while also figuring out who they might become after high school. “We Go Together” is a jubilant ensemble triumph.

And that ensemble features plenty of winning turns. Mary Moore and Noah Harrison are endearing in the playful duet “Mooning”, Jake Reynolds charms when picking out chords for “These Magic Changes”, Katie Lee impresses in the energetic hand jive competition, and Paul French brings a dangerous edge to the testosterone-fuelled Kenickie. 

Jocasta Almgill is the clear standout though, showing the searing pain and desperation behind Rizzo’s sharp-tongued bullying and slinky-hipped swagger, culminating in a ferocious “There Are Worse Things I Could Do”.

[Peter Andre](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/theatre-news/interviews/peter-andre-achieves-a-lifelong-dream-with-grease-in-the-west-end), if vocally underpowered, is surprisingly good fun as the Elvis-aping DJ and fantasy Teen Angel. It helps that he’s essentially in on the joke, sending up his own cheesy persona and incongruous presence in this professional musical theatre cast. “Beauty School Drop Out” is a highlight thanks to its camp, witty staging, with an angel whizzing in on a scooter and mannequin doll heads paraded around.

Frustratingly, the other songs lack that impact. [Arlene Phillips](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/theatre-news/interviews/choreographer-arlene-phillips-putting-women-front-and-centre-in-grease)’s choreography is effectively character-driven, from youthful rockabilly romps to the guys throwing punches, thrusting crotches and smoothing their hair, but you long for a number to really explode off the massive Dominion stage. Colin Richmond’s school gym-based set is likewise limiting.

But then that’s the core issue with this production, which feels caught between sombre realism and full-throttle, sugar-rush escapism. It feints at the former, like teasing a rumble with another gang, trouble with the cops, or a more hard-hitting look at predatory male behaviour, yet never quite commits. Though given the glee with which fans welcomed the end singalong megamix, I rather suspect that it’s the gentler, more inviting side of *Grease* which will keep audiences asking “Tell me more, tell me more”.

'Grease' review — this fitfully gritty take on the beloved musical still gives you chills

The Dominion Theatre, located in London, is an iconic venue with a remarkable history, hosting musicals, concerts, and performances for almost a century. Established in 1929, it prides itself in its distinctive Art Deco style that resonates with its visitors and transports them to a majestic era. The theatre provides a large capacity of over 2,000 seats, making it one of the largest in London. Known for hosting some of the greatest musicals of all time, the Dominion Theatre became a prominent venue for 'We Will Rock You' - a musical inspired by the band Queen. The stage has seen performances from many famous artists, including Judy Garland. 

### How to Get to the Venue 

The Dominion Theatre is conveniently situated at the junction of Tottenham Court Road and Charing Cross Road, making it easily accessible by public transport. The closest tube station is Tottenham Court Road, which is only a minute’s walk away. Services from the Northern and Central Line serve this station. Multiple bus routes also pass close to the theatre including 7, 8, 14, 19, 24, 29, 38, 55, 73, 98, 134, 176, and 242. For those driving, the nearest car park is an NCP on Adeline Place, with a 24-hour car park on Great Russell Street.

The Dominion Theatre opened on 3 Oct. 1929. The theatre is located on the site of the former Horse Shoe Brewery, site of the 1814 London Beer Flood.

The theatre screened the premiere of Charlie Chaplin’s film, *City Lights* (with Chaplin himself attending). During its history, the Dominion Theatre hosted movies such as *South Pacific* and *The Sound of Music*, whilst interspersed with live performances, most famously the *Judy Garland Show*. In the 1980s, music stars played at the Dominion Theatre, including Dolly Parton, Duran Duran, Bon Jovi, David Bowie and U2.  

In the early 1990s, plans were set to convert the theatre into a car park, but this was not followed through. Now, the Dominion Theatre is home to large musicals, including *Grease,* a 12-year run of *We Will Rock You,* and *The Prince of Egypt.*

The auditorium has two levels – the Stalls and Circle. It is a very large space and offers excellent views of the stage wherever you sit.

In the Stalls, the rake of the seating is very good, offering excellent views from most seats and the legroom is excellent too. 

In the Circle, the seats are strongly raked which offers a great view.
